The Alliance for Opportunity and Development (AOD) is a 501(c)(3), Christian, non-profit organization established in January 2012. Our mission is to provide education and training opportunities for low-income families that reduce poverty. Our primary program provides life-changing, job-training scholarships to low-income adults. We serve the greater Huntsville, Alabama community and in 2017, we started serving East Central Alabama with career readiness workshops. AOD's four flagship programs are:

  • "Learn and Earn" scholarships provide low-income adults the opportunity to learn new skills in vocational/technical training programs and then earn their way out of poverty. These are life-changing, job-training scholarships. AOD has several graduates since our inception working in new careers. Their accomplishments include moving out of subsidized housing, purchasing homes, purchasing reliable transportation, and continuing their education (sometimes with the help of employer provided tuition assistance). AOD also has three current students, one in the Licensed Practical Nursing program, one in the Engineering Graphics (drafting and technical illustration) program, and another in the Phlebotomy (blood drawing) program.
  • "Imagination and Aspiration" scholarships provide science and technology summer camp experiences to children from low-income families. As of January 2017, AOD has sent 10 children to summer camps organized by the Space and Rocket Center, Sci-Quest, and Mindgear Labs.
  • The annual AOD Community Career Fair targets jobseekers without degrees and connects them with local employers, educational institutions, and nonprofits. Our fifth annual career fair was April 12, 2017 in Huntsville at the Jaycee Community Building.
  • True Careers Workshops are new for 2017. These career readiness workshops are offered to youth and adults in the East Central Alabama area. This program is administered by former AOD board member, Jeff Coggin, in partnership with his CareerKwest USA initiative (http://careerkwestusa.com).  Jeff is currently partnering with Our House in Auburn to conduct workshops to at-risk youth and with the Christian Women's Job Corps to conduct workshops for their clients.
